Mortis, the once-forgotten God of Death, is a figure who clawed his way back from annihilation. Shrouded in dark robes with a skull visage that seems to drain the color from the world around him, Mortis is a being whose very presence is a reminder of the inevitable end that awaits all. His resurrection, a feat he achieved with his ally Temporos, the God of Time, marked the end of a 173-year absence, setting the stage for a new era in the divine hierarchy.
In his mortal life, Mortis was an elven man known for his unwavering dedication to a strict code of justice. He viewed death as the ultimate arbiter, delivering both punishment and solace to those he deemed deserving. As a formidable warlock, he was the earthly servant of Noose, the death god of the Wild Pantheon. His service to Noose was marked by a significant achievement—the reaping of a god's soul from the Fey Pantheon, an act that would have failed had it not been for the inadvertent assistance of Talavar, the God of Trickery. For this deed, Noose elevated Mortis to divinity, granting him a place among the gods as the sovereign of death.
The resurgence of Mortis and Temporos was put into motion by the prayers of a grieving grung named Ketchy. In the wake of a tragic loss inflicted by an illithid attack, Ketchy's pleas for vengeance and a chance to alter the past resonated with the dormant gods. They reached out from beyond their temporal prison, striking a bargain with the distraught Ketchy. In exchange for his aid in restoring their power and establishing the Chrono-Mortis Hourglass, they offered him a twisted form of solace: immortality. Though Ketchy could not reverse the atrocities of the past nor exact revenge on his family's killers, his newfound undying existence was the tool he needed to gather strength and allies to aid in his quest.
Mortis never returned to his old ways, his skeletal steed forever retired, his spectral gun decommissioned, leaving behind only warm sand - a reminder of the god that gave him his power.
In a grim turn of events, Mortis, the God of Death, and Temporos, the God of Time, once again fell to the malevolent forces of the Lich Lord Zoren. This devastating defeat was not merely a battle lost but a symbol of the Lich's relentless pursuit of dominion over all. The two gods, who had once triumphed over oblivion through the sheer force of will, found themselves outmatched in a cataclysmic confrontation that seemed to seal their fates once again.
The world of Rotania did not know they should mourn the loss of its silent guardians, but the CMH Coven would never forget and they certainly would not forgive.
Maybe someday, just maybe, when they are needed most, Mortis and Temporos will return to once again challenge the shadows that threaten to engulf their world.
